Troy runs to victory
Troy vs. Don Lugo.
Troy's 63-33 victory over Don Lugo on Thursday at Fullerton High was a good news-bad news situation for Troy coach Jim Burton.
The Warriors (3-0) rushed for 366 yards and scored nine touchdowns — eight of them on the ground — but also allowed 506 total yards and five touchdowns to the Conquistadores (2-2).
"We were looking to polish the Wing-T during a short week. I thought we executed well," Burton said. "We were disappointed to have given that many points. We knew they had good speed and athleticism."
The Warriors scored on their first nine possessions (discounting the last three seconds of the first half), including four times in the first quarter to take control.
Derrick Coleman and DeAngelo Bonner did most of the damage for the Warriors. Coleman finished with 183 yards and four touchdowns, Bonner 105 yards and two scores.
Just after Don Lugo tied the score at 7-7 early in the first quarter, Coleman returned a kickoff 39 yards to set the Warriors up at their own 49. That drive, as well as the two after that, ended with Coleman in the end zone.
