Sonora drives past Buena Park in league opener
LA HABRAKyle Mahlstede threw for two touchdown passes, and Justin Mun rushed for 120 yards on 24 carries, scoring another, as Sonora opened Freeway League play with a 30-14 victory over Buena Park on Friday night at La Habra High.
The Raiders (3-3, 1-0) posted 365 yards total offense and held Buena Park (4-2, 1-0), which held a 14-12 halftime lead, to just 158 yards, only 10 after halftime.
Sonora opened with a methodical 15-play, 80-yard drive that erased more than 7 minutes off the clock. The Raiders recovered from a personal foul penalty deep in Coyote territory to take a 6-0 lead when Mahlstede connected with Jacob Kent for an 8-yard touchdown pass.
The only trouble the Raiders caused for themselves was on conversions. They failed on all five attempts, included a pair of blocks by the Coyotes. Buena Park took a 7-6 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the first half when Deven Boston recovered his own fumble in the end zone after a 33-yard run.
A Raider drive lasting 63 yards, on 10 plays, culminated in a 1-yard TD run by Mun with 27 seconds left before halftime. Buena Park responded with a 26-yard TD strike from Tarvis Hood to Jaylin Hawkins.
Sonora dominated after intermission, taking the lead for good on a 24-yard scoring from Mahlstede to Nate Miranda. Matthew Villasenor, who had 98 yards on 26 carries, added a 1-yard touchdown run midway through the final quarter.
