Big passing plays pace El Dorado over Canyon
ORANGE Two big passing plays by El Dorado were the difference in a 20-0 victory over Canyon in a Century League showdown game Friday night at Kelly Stadium.
The backbreaker was a 66-yard strike down El Dorado's sideline from quarterback Andres Ambuehl to Garret Dressel. The senior receiver broke a tackle, put a quick move on another defender and was finally downed at the Comanches 1-yard line.
On the next play, Ambuehl punched it in for a 1-yard touchdown run and the 20-0 lead with 28 seconds left in the third.
"Garret made a great play," Ambuehl said. "He got open, broke a tackle and made the play. When that happens, it's easy."
The victory by El Dorado (6-3-1, 4-1) gave it the No. 2 seed in the league going into the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs.
El Dorado scored its first touchdown following a 21-yard pass to Jeff Blackamore to the Comanches 13. Three plays later, Ambuehl scored on a 2-yard dive to extend his team's lead to 13-0.
The loss knocked Canyon (4-6, 2-3) out of postseason play and ended its season.
