Newport Beach- Sage Hill high school fell to Army-Navy of Carlsbad 14-6 on Friday night.
The Sage Hill Lightening had allowed 145 points in their first four games, but held the Warriors to only 14, all coming in the second quarter. They even added two interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense. However, The Lightening were their own enemy as two special teams mistakes led to two Army-Navy touchdowns.
On the first Warrior scoring drive, a 24-yard punt by the Warriors deflected off a Sage Hill player and back into the hands of the Warriors. With the momentum, Warrior running back Tommy Brown found daylight on a 37-yard run, which led to his one-yard touchdown run.
Then the Warriors capitalized on a failed fake punt attempt by Sage Hill, which was snapped poorly to Craig Jackson on 4th and 2 on the Lightning’s own 44-yard line. On the second play of the drive, Varden Bernstein connected with Derrick Buchanan on a 34-yard touchdown pass.
The Lightning only struck once when Randall Mycorn tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Dusty Orrantia in the 1st quarter. They nearly struck again late in the 4th, but were stopped inches short on 4th and 1 on the Warrior 11 yard line with 2:11 left.
