LaQuinta (1-3) Coach James Stewart said his squad was too cute early in the contest, and tying up the loose ends simply meant giving the ball to senior running back Nathan Do.
“He’s our best player and we weren’t giving him the ball enough and that’s my fault,” Stewart said amid a celebrating throng of players. “The kids just gave everything they had tonight and I am so proud of every one of them.”
Do, who rushed for 170 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown, said the key was the squad coming together in practice.
“All the hard work finally paid off,” Do said with a smile. “We were able to tie everything together tonight and get a win.”
John Rio got the Aztecs on the board with an 8-yard scoring run in the first quarter as part of a 295-yard night on the ground for LaQuinta. Paul Gomezclosed the scoring with a 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Carlos Mendezled Estancia (2-3) with 128 rushing yards.
