PASADENA - Terry Williams scored two touchdowns and Godinez (1-4) recorded its first-ever varsity victory, 15-7, over Marshall of Pasadena on Friday at John Muir High.
"Oh wow, No. 1," Grizzlies coach Aaron Kaye said afterwards as his young team, without a senior on the roster, whooped and hollered. "We've been working so hard and I'm so proud of the kids. They earned it."
Williams, a sophomore receiver and defensive end, caught a 12-yard fade from quarterback Gabriel Sauceda midway through the second quarter for a 6-0 lead.
He added a 70-yard interception return for a score when he stepped in front of Salvador Murillo's quick slant and went untouched the other way.
Williams also forced a fumble on a sack of Murillo late with the Eagles (0-4) threatening to tie the score.
Marshall (0-4) had only 85 yards of offense, but still had a chance to win the game late as Godinez lost four fumbles and punter Santiago Fuentes was tackled at his own 1 yard line after he was unable to handle a high snap.
Eagles running back Diego Lugo scored on a 2-yard run two plays later and finished with a game-high 57 yards on 14 carries.
