Brethren Christian struggles in loss to St. Anthony

LONG BEACH - John Graves rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries Friday to lead St. Anthony of Long Beach to a 35-6 victory over Brethren Christian in a nonleague game at Clark Avenue Field.

St. Anthony wasted little time jumping out to a 7-0 lead during the game’s opening sequence. After the Saints (2-2) held Brethren Christian to a three-and-out, Sonny Montoya returned the ensuing punt 53 yards for a touchdown.

Two possessions later, the Warriors (0-4) muffed a punt snap on their own 2-yard line, and Graves punched it across on the next play to extend St. Anthony’s lead to 14-0.

Lamont Rowe scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper to cap the Saints’ next drive, but the ensuing onside-kick attempt was returned 29 yards to the St. Anthony 16-yard line by Brethren Christian’s Bryant Freese. Three plays later, Drew Fabrigas’ three-yard scoring run cut the Warriors’ deficit to 21-6.

But Rowe found Montoya open down the left sideline for a 38-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left in the first half.
