GARDEN GROVE - Kyle Middlebrooks rushed for three touchdowns and added a fourth via a 99-yard kick return to help Fountain Valley post a 27-13 win over host Pacifica Friday night at Bolsa Grande High.
Middlebrooks, who rushed for 253 yards on 18 carries, opened the scoring with a 38-yard run on the Barons’ (2-1) second drive. After Fountain Valley’s next drive ended in a missed field goal, Middlebrooks capped a 78-yard drive with a 74-yard run to put the Barons up 13-0 with 5:06 left in the half.
Middlebrooks opened the second half in similar scoring fashion, taking the opening kickoff at the one and not stopping until he hit paydirt 13 seconds later.
Pacifica quarterback Ray Huizar engineered two scoring drives, firing an 11-yard pass to Joel Willias and scoring himself on a 1-yard run to bring the Mariners (1-1) within 20-13 with 5:49 remaining.
The Barons ran the clock after that, scoring on a 2-yard Middlebrooks run with 13 seconds left.
