NEWPORT BEACH - Hector Solis kicked a 35-yard field goal to give Costa Mesa the lead just minutes into its contest with Corona del Mar on Friday.
That was the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal night for the Mustangs.
The Sea Kings scored the game’s remaining points in a 55-3 nonleague victory at Newport Harbor High.
Junior running back JD Abbott led the way for Corona del Mar (1-0), rushing for 204 yards — 184 in the first half — and three touchdowns.
Senior Max Haase also had a stellar night, finishing with two touchdowns, two sacks and a fumble recovery.
Haase's 9-yard fumble recovery and return for a score put CdM on the board in the first quarter. He added a 6-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.
Quarterback Mitch Sands completed just five passes, but two of those went for touchdowns, including a 10-yarder to Noah Molnar on a fade pattern to the far corner of the end zone.
Costa Mesa (0-1) was without starting running back Robbie Gemayel, who cut his foot badly in an accident Sunday. He is expected back in next week’s game against Beckman.
