Lancona lifts No. 9 Tesoro past Woodbridge
IRVINE - Tanner Lancona scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead No. 9 Tesoro to a 74-67 victory over Woodbridge in pool play of the Irvine World News/Gary Raya Classic on Thursday at Woodbridge High.
The Washington State-bound power forward scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including a basket that gave the Titans (9-1) a 66-64 lead and sparked a 10-3 run in the final minutes of the contest.
The Titans play again Saturday, although their opponent hasn’t been determined. Woodbridge (2-5) plays host to Esperanza on Friday at 6 p.m.
“They are always tough,” Titans coach Steve Garrett said of the Warriors. “You’ve got to give them credit.”
The Warriors led for most of the third quarter and the first part of the fourth.
Tesoro trailed, 58-56, before going on an 8-0 run and appeared to be pulling away. But the Warriors scored the next six points to tie the score before Lancona’s basket put the Titans ahead to stay.
Woodbridge was forced to foul as the seconds were ticking away, but the Titans were 6 for 6 from the line in the final 36 seconds to thwart any chance of a Warriors’ comeback.
Chris Ho led the Warriors with 23 points.
