Corona del Mar holds off Woodbridge
IRVINE - Corona del Mar stayed unbeaten in the Pacific Coast League on Thursday, but just barely.
The Sea Kings rallied from a 20-point deficit, survived two winning field-goal attempts by Woodbridge and escaped with a 31-30 victory at Irvine High.
Derek Calderon, who rushed for 227 yards in the game, ran for a 95-yard touchdown to give Woodbridge a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.
The Warriors (3-5, 0-3) were up, 17-3, at halftime.
Woodbridge led, 30-10, after Calderon scampered for a 29-yard scoring run and Matt Callahan found Kyle Kelley open for a 15-yard touchdown. The second TD was set up by Kelley’s second blocked punt of the game.
Corona del Mar (7-1, 3-0) didn’t go away, however. The Sea Kings rallied with two quick scores at the end of the third quarter.
First, Josh Giger caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Lawson, and then Cole Cottrell reversed field on a 50-yard punt return for a score.
Corona del Mar took the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter. Giger caught a 72-yard touchdown pass from Lawson.
Woodbridge’s Donald Jackson missed a 35-yard field goal with three seconds left and then pulled a 30-yard attempt wide right after CdM was called for running into the kicker.
