Whittier Christian pushes way past Baldwin Park
WHITTIER - Garrett Fulbright spent the first three quarters of Whittier Christian’s CIF-SS Mid-Valley Division playoff game struggling to find anywhere to run, but when he saw his opening in the fourth quarter, he took it.
Fulbright busted off a 38-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-2 to seal the Heralds’ 27-17 victory over Baldwin Park Friday night.
The Heralds will play Monrovia next Saturday at Monrovia. The time for the game has not been set.
“We put (Jeff) Worthy in on short-yardage, and he always opens up big holes,” Fulbright said. “I knew I was going to break it when I saw the linebackers all go left and the play went to the right.”
The TD run was the third of the night for Fulbright and gave the Heralds a 27-10 lead two plays into the fourth quarter. Fulbright finished the game with 81 yards rushing on 19 carries.
The Heralds (9-3) were dominated by the Braves (9-3) in time of possession by almost a 2-to-1 margin, but Whittier Christian made the plays when it mattered. The Heralds kept the Braves from scoring after two lengthy drives to open the game and then scored two TDs in an 11 -second span in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead.
The Heralds (9-3) overcame several penalties and put together and 80-yard opening drive as Stephen Anderson passed for 86 yards, and Fulbright scored on a 4-yard TD run
