HUNTINGTON BEACH – Tanner Fanjoy scored 20points and Thousand Oaks took advantage of cold Westminster shooting to beat the Lions, 60-37, in a CIF-SS Division 2AA first-round boys basketball playoff game at Marina High on Friday night.

Only three players scored for Westminster (12-15).

The Lions made only 1 of 10 field-goal attempts in the first quarter, with Daniel Thomsen's 3-pointer cutting the Thousand Oaks lead to 8-4 with 3:57 left in the period.

"You've got to hit shots; you have to have guys that are going to hunt for shots," Westminster coach Jesse Miramontez said. "We really needed that today, and we just didn't get it.

"Feet weren't set, hands weren't ready, confidence wasn't there, you're not going to win."

The Lancers had a 12-7 lead after one quarter, but Westminster's Myron Aiava hit a 3-pointer a minute into the second to make it 12-10. Dakota Pierce answered from the lane, and Fanjoy added a 3-pointer in the next 50 seconds to give the Lancers a 17-10 edge, and they led 29-21 at the break.

"They hit shots, and we couldn't hit shots, and we couldn't trade with them, and they started to extend a little bit on us," Miramontez said.

The Lions had one charge left in them, early in the third, but not before Thousand Oaks was able to take a 32-21 lead in the first minute of the quarter.

Paul Pena scored off Aiava's assist, then got a pass underneath the basket and drew a foul on a layup, completing the three-point-play to make it 32-26 with 5:38 to go.

Pierce and Thomsen traded baskets, but the Westminster junior's layup at the 4:20 mark would be the last field goal for the Lions until Aiava hit a 3-pointer with 1:42 left in the game.

Pena and Thomsen scored 15 points each for Westminster, while Aiava was held to seven.
