Pioneers improve to 2-0.
Although the picture wasn’t always pretty Friday night, the coach saw a 186-yard, three touchdown performance from Ruben Ortega as Western wore down visiting Valencia, 24-7, at Western High.
The Pioneers (2-0) controlled the game from the outset. They outgained the Tigers (1-1), 281 to 84, in the first half while holding a 17-7 lead and a 2:1 advantage in time of possession.
Ortega had 118 yards at the half with scoring runs of 3 and 21 yards.
Valencia got its only points late in the half on a 38-yard TD pass from Dave Pina to Karsen Garcia.
“Western played well,” said Valencia coach Mike Marrujo. “We had limited snaps and did what we could.”
Any chance of a Valencia comeback was put to rest when Western went on a lengthy drive covering the third and fourth quarter. Ortega had four runs for first down on the 15-play, 72-yard drive and sealed it with a 7-yard scoring run.
