Newport Harbor charges back into title picture

OCVARSITY.COM

Look who is back in the Sunset League playoff picture.

One week after a 35-7 loss to Huntington Beach, Newport Beach regrouped and took down then eighth-ranked Los Alamitos, 35-21, on Friday night.

The victory moved the Sailors into a tie for second with Huntington Beach at 2-1 with two games remaining.

Newport Harbor faces Marina this week with a chance to get to 3-1. Huntington Beach (2-1) takes on Los Alamitos (1-2). Edison (3-0) faces Fountain Valley (1-2) this week.

There is a good chance the Sailors will face Edison next week for the Sunset League title.

The Sailors had a slow start, losing three of their first four nonleague games.

After their victory over Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach on Oct. 6, the Sailors opened league with a 33-7 victory over Fountain Valley.

• Tickets for the Mater Dei-Servite game can be purchased at both schools.

Servite has won the previous two games in the series, including its 21-14 victory last year at Angel Stadium in front of 15,402.

Servite coach Troy Thomas said this past Friday that running back Charlie Etiaki should be cleared to return to action this week. Etiaki suffered a collarbone injury in the La Habra game Sept. 16.

• It is Bell Game week for Edison and Fountain Valley. The annual game will be played Friday at Orange Coast College.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public at Fountain Valley today. Tickets can be purchased at the financial office. The office is open 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The office is closed from lunch from 1-2 p.m.

Tickets can also be purchased at the Edison Financial Office.

Edison has won the past six meetings in the series.

• Just when you thought rivalry week had passed over Mission Viejo with last week's 29-21 victory over San Clemente, it is back.

Friday night, Mission Viejo will play host to Tesoro with first place in the South Coast League on the line. Both teams are 2-0.

The Titans defeated Dana Hills last week, 35-26.

After losing consecutive games to the Titans in the series, the Diablos have won the past two meetings, 30-7 last year and 60-14 in 2009.

Cox3 will televise the game as its Game of the Week. The first airing is Friday at 11:30 p.m. The game will be replayed throughout the weekend.

• Here is my top 10 ballot this week: 1. Servite; 2. Mission Viejo; 3. San Clemente; 4. Santa Margarita; 5. Orange Lutheran; 6. Edison; 7. Tesoro; 8. Mater Dei; 9. La Habra; 10. Villa Park.
