SVC escapes with a 21-20 victory
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO- Saddleback Valley Christian emerged victorious over Riverside Christian, 21-20, at JSerra High in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs Friday night.
The Warriors (7-4, 5-1) did not get off to a good start, allowing the Cougars (5-5, 2-2) to score 14 consecutive points in the first quarter.
The Warriors retaliated with 14 points in the second quarter, and the teams entered the half tied.
On their opening drive of the second half, the Warriors capped a six-play, 50-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run by running back William Hinn, who finished the night with 138 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.
The Warriors were up, 21-14, in the middle of the third quarter when they gave up a 75-yard touchdown run to Cougars running back DJ Gordon.
The Cougars were about to tie the score with the extra point when the Warriors special teams came up with a huge stop and blocked the kick to retain a one-point lead.
