Kaitlin Cochran (7) is mobbed by her team Friday after her home run that gave Rosary the victory against Mater Dei.

All-County outfielder Kaitlin Cochran was struggling with her swing the past week.

Struggle might not be the right word for Cochran, who is hitting better than .600. But she wasn't making the kind of solid contact she had become accustomed to.

That was until her game-ending homer in the bottom of the 10th inning that gave No. 4 Rosary a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Mater Dei on Friday at Clark Park.

"The last week she felt out of sorts on her swing," Rosary coach Tom Tice said. "She got a hold of that one."

Cochran's shot was only the second hit of the game the Royals got off of Mater Dei ace Briana Santos.

Santos gave up a leadoff single to Katie Chifcian, who was thrown out trying to steal second, in the top of the second inning. Then Santos threw eight perfect innings before giving up the homer.

Rosary's Taylor Peyton scattered six singles, struck out six and didn't give up a walk to record the shutout. It was Peyton's fifth shutout of the season.

The Royals (16-4, 4-0) took over sole possession of first place in the Serra League with the victory over the Monarchs (15-5, 4-1).

"This should make the last game of the year pretty exciting," Tice said, referring to Rosary's rematch against Mater Dei on May 12 at Thornton Park.
