Villa Park's Viney dismissed
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Villa Park's Viney dismissed
All-Orange County forward Drew Viney was dismissed from the Villa Park boys basketball team Monday, Villa Park coach Kevin Reynolds said.
Reynolds said an accumulation of issues led to his decision to cut Viney.
"No one thing led to this decision," he said.
Reynolds doubted that Viney would return to the team as it prepares for the final week of the regular season, and the playoffs that start next week.
"I don't see any way that would happen," he said.
Reynolds declined to specify what happened that led to Monday's action. Reynolds and Viney held a meeting Monday afternoon, after which Reynolds confirmed his decision.
Viney could not be reached for comment Monday.
Viney, a 6-foot-8 senior who signed with Oregon in November, was an All-County first-team selection last season. This season he is averaging 28 points a game. In Villa Park's most recent game, a 75-59 loss to Campbell Hall of North Hollywood on Saturday in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei, Viney scored 27 on a 10-for-17 shooting effort from the field.
Defensively, however, Viney's play has been lethargic at times, as has his movement on offense when he does not have the basketball in his hands.
Villa Park is No.7 in the county. The Spartans are 17-6 overall, and 6-2 in the Century League. They are in second place behind Canyon, which beat Villa Park in their two league meetings, including a 64-55 home victory for Canyon last week.
A foot injury sidelined Viney for several games this season, including Villa Park's home loss to Canyon.
Viney was All-County second team as a sophomore in the 2004-05 season. He has been on the varsity roster since his freshman season.
