IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Villa Park. The Spartans have won consecutive league titles and they are favored to make it three. Can anybody derail them? There will be a new quarterback under center, but there is talent throughout the roster, including two-way stars Meki Tafuna, Nick Whitton and several returning all-league performers. Villa Park returns 13 starters

UNDER CONSTRUCTION:

Canyon. The Comanches went 0-10 last season, but return 12 starters as they look to put 2011 out of their memory.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Troy Poole, Esperanza, RB – Poole rushed for 1,894 yards and 19 touchdowns last season.

Nick Whitton, Villa Park, OL/DL – Whitton will see action on both the offensive and defensive lines for the Spartans.

Josh Vizcaya, Brea Olinda, RB – Vizcaya turned in another standout season as a junior, rushing for 1,453 yards and 24 touchdowns.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR:

Villa Park vs. Foothill, Oct. 5. Their meeting last year went into overtime, with Villa Park winning 28-21.

TOUGHEST SCHEDULE:

El Modena. The Vanguards nonleague schedule features games against a pair of the Empire League tri-champions (Yorba Linda and Cypress) and then a date with Orange Lutheran. They conclude nonleague with Northwood, but league opens with Villa Park and Foothill.
