Viles, Edison still too much for Dana Hills
The QB throws for 4 TDs as the Chargers roll to a 47-16 victory in the Pac-5 playoffs.
COSTA MESA - Matt Viles didn't set a new school passing record like he did the first he played against Dana Hills this season.
This time, Viles was simply Viles.
He completed passes to seven different receivers and passed for four touchdowns to lead host Edison to a 47-16 victory over the Dolphins Friday night at Orange Coast College in a Pac-5 second-round game.
Top-seeded Edison (12-0) will host fourth-seeded Lakewood, the Moore League champion, in the semifinals next Saturday. Lakewood defeated Bishop Amat, 34-17, in another second-round game Friday.
Dana Hills, the second seed from the South Coast League, ended the season with a 9-3 record.
Viles completed 18 of 28 passes for 269 yards. Back on Sept. 17 against the Dolphins, he passed for 457 yards.
Viles has passed for seven touchdowns in the first two playoff games.
"He's something special," Edison coach Dave White said of his quarterback. "He starts it all. He had a great night. The receivers did a great job, we pass blocked really well and the defense played well."
In the first meeting against the Dolphins, Edison trailed at halftime before going on to a 34-17 victory. Viles and the offense didn't want to have a repeat occurrence this time.
Edison opened the game by scoring on its first two possessions, both touchdown passes from Viles to Dylan Leener. The first was an 18-yard pass, and the second was a 6-yard pass for a 13-0 lead with 6:36 left om the quarter.
The Dolphins would respond. Quarterback Josh Dean scored on a 10-yard touchdown run and on the next possession Brenden Beckley kicked a 39-yard field goal.
"Five of our first 11 games, we were behind at halftime," White said. "So, we're used to momentum changes. We came out like we thought we would, they made a little run, but we bounced back."
After Dana Hills climbed to within 13-9 early in the second quarter, the Chargers responded with a 15-yard touchdown run by Davion Orphey and a 5-yard touchdown pass from Viles to Jeff Trojan for a 27-9 halftime lead.
The Chargers would eventually score 34 consecutive points.
"The offense was really clicking tonight," Viles said. "We were all on the same page. We have some good receivers here. They're smart and they know how to adjust their routes to certain coverages and I tried to get them the ball in space."
Edison opened the second half with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Viles to Trojan. Wade Houston and backup quarterback Stephen Andrew scored fourth touchdown runs.
The Dolphins stopped the onslaught of points with a 6-yard touchdown run by Chris Kearney with 2:48 left in the game.
Edison advanced to the Pac-5 championship game in 2006 before losing to Orange Lutheran. Coach White calls this team "special."
"To beat the same team twice in one year is hard to do," White said. "To be 12-0 is hard to do when you're playing the Mater Deis and Servites and our (Sunset) league."
