Calvary Chapel gets historic victory against Ocean View
COSTA MESA - Calvary Chapel defeated Ocean View, 14-7, in a nonleague game Saturday night at Estancia High. It was an historic victory for the Eagles who ended a decade-long losing streak at the hands of the Seahawks.
“It was very exciting,” Calvary Chapel coach DJ Jett said. “We’re very happy for the boys. They’ve really been working hard all summer.”
Junior Danny Mattero started the scoring for Calvary Chapel (2-0) with a 9-yard touchdown run with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter. Mattero rushed for 20 yards on five carries while also picking up two interceptions.
Senior Colin Kearon completed 12 of 24 passes for 112 yards. He connected with junior Nick Meldrum on a 24-yard pass with 8:59 left in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles the lead.
“Colin has all the mechanics,” Jett said. “We’re not surprised that he’s really doing a great job at keeping his poise and showing great leadership out there on the field and really coming through in our first two games in clutch situations for us.”
Ocean View (0-1) scored its lone touchdown on a 9-yard run by senior Kyle Langley late in the third quarter. Langley finished with 16 carries for 101 yards.
Senior Garrett Hoffman lead the offensive charge for the Seahawks with 15 carries for 106 yards. Senior Dallas Broge completed 5 of 10 passes and rushed for 16 yards.
The Eagles defense held strong in the final quarter, stopping back-to-back drives by the Seahawks in their own territory with just seconds remaining in the game.
“Our guys really came through on fourth down,” Jett said of his defense. “It’s our guys showing their character.”
Calvary Chapel hopes to keep its winning streak alive when it faces La Quinta (0-1) on Friday at Estancia. Ocean View will play host to Estancia (1-0) in Huntington Beach on Friday.
