IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
El Toro. The Chargers have six all-league returnees, including 1,000-yard rusher Nico Jackson, a talented defense and a huge offensive line. El Toro is the consensus favorite to take the league title and should be a contender in the Southwest Division.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION:
Capistrano Valley. The Cougars have a new coach, Matt Poston, who replaces Chi Chi Biehn, and a lot of non-senior starters, but they should be competitive in the newly-configured Sea View League.
PLAYER TO WATCH:
Nico Jackson. The El Toro running back rushed for 1,000 yards and made first team All-Sea View League last season and he should have another big season running behind the Chargers massive offensive line.
Mark Martindale. The 6-3, 260-pounder made All-CIF last season as a tight end and nose guard for Laguna Hills.
OTHER TOP PLAYERS:
Aliso Niguel: OT Kourosh Khoylou; QB Andrew Ossola; and RB Anthony Robinson
Capistrano Valley: MLB James Benedix; OT Alex Gonzalez; WR/SS Alex Heineman; K Ryan Steska; and WR/SS Cole Winninghoff
El Toro: OT Jack Alvarez; K/P Wes Harris; FS Chad Hennings; SS Ryan Lewis; OLB Kyle Smith; QB Mac Spees;
Laguna Hills: WR Tevon Brock; RB/OLB Jonny Miranda; K/P Pat Tereschuk; and DB/WR Ryan Ur
San Juan Hills: QB Wil Acromite; WR/SS Rocky Bragg; WR/OLB Michael Perryman; and OG Ari Uzo-Okereke
MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
El Toro at Laguna Hills, Nov. 11. Laguna Hills has owned the Pacific Coast League the past four seasons. El Toro reached the quarterfinals last season and could make another deep run this season. The league championship could be on the line when the Chargers and Hawks meet up in this regular-season finale.
TOUGHEST SCHEDULE:
Capistrano Valley. The Cougars have a challenging nonleague schedule with games against Trabuco Hills, Cypress, Valencia and Dana Hills. That schedule should toughen up Capo heading into league play.
