Los Amigos collects first victory
GARDEN GROVE - A breakout game by freshman Jerry Saldivar helped propel Los Amigos to a 14-6 road victory over Bolsa Grande in a Garden Grove League contest Thursday night.
Saldivar, who saw his most extensive action of the season, rushed for a team-high 120 yards on 26 carries. His rushing effort and an impressive performance from the defense combined to give the Lobos (1-9, 1-4) their first victory and leave Bolsa Grande winless (0-10, 0-5).
“It’s been tough. We’ve been really young this year and really inexperienced and it showed all season,” Los Amigos head coach Carl Agnew said. “Every week they’ve grown. … I can’t say enough about them. They did a great job tonight and all season long.”
The Los Amigos offense had a hard time moving the ball in the first half, failing to get a first down on its first two possessions. However, on the second play of its third possession, Daniel Hernandez connected with Jose Perez for an 87-yard touchdown pass.
Up 7-0 at the half, Los Amigos gambled with an onside kick to start the third quarter. Their risk paid off as they marched the ball 50 yards down field and scored on a five yard pass to sophomore Alex Lopez, giving them a 14-0 lead.
Bolsa Grande (0-10, 0-5) scored on a 38 yard touchdown run by Mikhail Lowery on the ensuing possession but would not threaten to score for the rest of the night.
