JSerra defense takes over, shuts out El Modena

ORANGE - Matthew Kewell intercepted two passes as JSerra's defense forced three turnovers in the Lions' 22-0 victory over El Modena in a nonleague game Friday at El Modena High.
Kewell's first interception, on the first play of the second quarter, led to a JSerra (3-0) score — a 29-yard field goal by Luis Valentin that increased the Lions' led to 10-0. His second interception, late in the third quarter at the Lions 29-yard line, halted the deepest penetration of El Modena (1-2) in the game.
"Our defense made stops and it gave us momentum," Kewell said. "The defense was the key to the game."
JSerra scored on its first possession of the second half to up the lead to 16-0. Joseph Kimpler capped an eight-play drive with a 14-yard TD run. In the fourth quarter, the Lions sealed the victory as they went on a 15-play, eight-minute scoring drive. Colby Goldschmied scored on a 1-yard run. Goldschmied rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries. Hayden Greene tossed an eight-yard TD pass to Otto Behrle late in the first quarter to give JSerra a 7-0 lead. Anthony Daniel completed 12 passes for 135 yards and Aaron Fittery and Kyle Calvo each had five catches for the Vanguards.
