Fountain Valley wins for seriously injured teammate

WESTMINSTER - Fountain Valley won one for J.D. Hinnant on Friday night, Coach John Shipp said.

But the Barons would’ve much preferred their senior left tackle and co-captain had been there for the 31-13 Sunset League victory over host Marina at Westminster High.

Hinnant, recruited by nine of the Pac-12 teams and Nebraska, among other colleges, was injured in the afternoon in a car accident while en route to the Fountain Valley team meal.

He suffered a broken pelvis, tailbone and nose, and was still unconscious, Shipp said, relaying the last update the Barons received by the time their game ended.

"We won it for him," said Shipp, after the Barons finished 1-4 in league and 4-6 overall, as senior quarterback Chris d’Entremont threw for 282 yards and three TDs — 65- and 62-yarders to sophomore Ryan Finley, and a 31-yard circus catch by junior Jacob Church.

Fountain Valley police officials said a student who attends Fountain Valley High was injured in a crash at the Tahoe Circle and Ellis Avenue intersection shortly before 3 p.m.

The student was in critical but stable condition, authorities said.

Shipp said junior Sam Bingham played very well in Hinnant’s spot, "but you can never really replace J.D."

Marina (0-5, 3-7) got its first two TDs in Sunset League play from Eli Cabaccang, who scored on a 4-yard run in the third quarter to cut Fountain Valley’s lead to 10-7.

"I told the kids we were going to win, 14-10, but we shot ourselves in the foot too many times," Vikings coach George Pascoe said.

Church’s TD catch, with 8.7 left in the third quarter, stopped the Vikings’ momentum.

Then the Barons’ Jason Baker returned a punt 43 yards, and Steele Escobedo converted it into a 7-yard TD run.

Finley added his second TD catch to make it 31-7 before Cabaccang took an Austin Sojka pass over the middle, and out-sprinted the Barons defense for a 66-yard score.

An occupant of another vehicle involved in the crash reportedly suffered facial injuries.

One vehicle was traveling eastbound on Ellis while another was turning onto Ellis from Tahoe when they collided in the intersection, traffic investigators said.

Authorities are investigating which vehicle had right-of-way.
