SA Valley falls hard against Verbum Dei
SANTA ANA - Santa Ana Valley failed to capitalize on early opportunities and was unable to hold down Verbum Dei’s big-play offense, falling to the Eagles, 49-6, at Santa Ana Stadium on Saturday.
The Eagles’ misdirection-heavy running game seemed to create big gains all night, going for 419 yards on 34 carries. Running back Anthony Charles, in particular, went off, scoring three times, including a 96-yard run, and rushing for 215 yards on 14 carries.
The Falcons (1-1) failed to capitalize on two early scoring opportunities.
A drive bridging the first and second quarters stalled in the red zone, resulting in a missed 29-yard field goal attempt.
On the ensuing Verbum Dei (2-0) drive, Charles fumbled, giving the Falcons the ball on the 13, but a sack on the first play of the drive knocked them back to the 21, and three consecutive incomplete passes turned the ball over on downs.
Verbum Dei went up 21-0 four plays later after a Dylan Hall 60-yard TD run.
The Falcons did get on the board late in the third, after an 80-yard drive was capped by a Joe Mohr 6-yard run. However, the Eagles scored on the next offensive play to go up 35-6.
