IRVINE - University held off a fourth-quarter rally by Woodbridge to capture a 24-21 nonleague victory Friday night at Irvine High.
The Trojans (4-0) held a 24-7 lead going into the final quarter, but the Warriors (0-3) scored two touchdowns to make it interesting.
"They rallied really well," University Coach Mark Cunningham said. "You have to give it to those kids and that coaching staff, they never quit."
Woodbridge cut the lead to 24-21 when quarterback Charlie Kelley connected with Kyle Merritt on a 12-yard TD pass with 1:11 to play.
However, University recovered the onside kick and was able to run out the clock.
University had a solid running game led by Tyler Fletcher, who rushed for 151 yards on 18 carries.
Fletcher scored a 2-yard TD run in the first quarter and a 4-yard run in the second to put the Trojans ahead, 21-7.
