Sunny Hills remains undefeated
PLACENTIA – Sunny Hills is a different boys soccer team this season because not only are the Lancers scoring more goals, but they are also doing it in pressure situations.
And one month into the schedule, the Lancers are still undefeated because of that.
Although, Long Beach Wilson gave Sunny Hills quite a scare on Thursday night at Valencia High, tying the score on the final play of the first half.
But with just three minutes remaining in the game, Osiris Garfias knocked in the decisive goal in the No. 4 Lancers’ 2-1 pool play victory at the North Orange County Championships to improve to 11-0.
Sunny Hills boys soccer coach Mike Schade thought he had a goal a few seconds before Garfias sent home the game winner when Gerardo Arias launched a 30-yard shot toward the Bruins’ goal. It hit the crossbar and bounced straight down. Schade thought it went in, but the referee didn’t agree despite the protest.
Garfias was the there, though, following the play and he collected the loose ball and scored just moments after he was subbed back into the game.
“We gave him 10 minutes off, and we were just talking about how we needed someone to give us a lift … someone who could take us to the next level,” Schade said. “I felt like the game could end in a 1-1 tie. Both teams were kind of settling in, and then he (Garfias) steps in.”
The Lancers have one of the top goal keepers in the county in Jordan Brinkley, a four-year varsity player. But having a player like that can have its downsides at times. Too often, Schade said the Lancers think that Brinkley is going to get to every ball in the box. He can’t, though, and that opens up some space for the opponent.
That’s exactly what happened in the closing seconds of the first half when Martin Rafael sent a corner kick to the far post for the Bruins. Brinkley couldn’t cut it off, and Ian McBride had plenty of room to redirect it into the goal to tie the game, 1-1.
The Lancers took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute after Hernan Sotelo drew a penalty kick, which Arias drilled into the upper left corner of the goal.
