Troy’s girls swim team provided a reminder Saturday that there is plenty of speed in North County.

Seniors Katelyn Martin and Katja Claesson each captured an event while senior Gwen Walter posted two top-five finishes at the Mt. SAC High School Meet of Champions.

Troy, a contender in Division 2, finished fifth in a team competition won by Division 2 rival Glendora.

Martin captured the 50-yard freestyle in 23.87 seconds – fourth-fastest in Orange County this season – and placed second in the 100 freestyle in 51.79, also fourth in the county.

Claesson touched first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.80, fifth in the county.

Walter finished fifth in the 200 free (1:55.39) and fourth in the 500 free (5:03.68).

Troy races at Fullerton on Wednesday and plays host to Sunny Hills on April 24. The Freeway League finals will be at Fullerton College on May 3.

CAPO’S DeSHON COMMITS 

Capistrano Valley standout Spencer DeShon has committed to Stanford, his mother, Stephanie, said in e-mail. The senior will join his senior teammate, Jack DesCombes, at Stanford.

FOOTHILL SWIM GAMES RETURN

The Foothill Swim Games return this week. The girls prelims are Thursday at 3 p.m. The boys prelims are Friday at the same time. Finals are Saturday at 10 a.m. Crean Lutheran’s duo of Lindsey Engel and Ella Eastin are expected to be among the swimmers to watch.

Top meets Tuesday: Yorba Linda at Kennedy, JSerra at Santa Margarita and Edison at Fountain Valley.
