Troy tops Sonora, 21-14
LA HABRA - Neither Troy nor Sonora could gain an advantage during the first half of the Freeway League contest between the schools Friday at La Habra High.
Troy was able to take control in the second half and come away with a 21-14 victory in the final game of the regular season.
The victory gave the Warriors (7-3, 3-2) a third place finish and clinched the league’s No. 3 seed for the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs.
“It’s been a good year,” Troy coach Jim Burton said. “Anytime we can get seven wins, it is good for the program.”
Burton said good defense was the key to the victory.
The Raiders (3-7, 2-3) converted a first-quarter interception by Michael Servantes — his first of two — into a TD and a 7-0 lead.
Troy responded with a 10-play drive, capped by a 89-yard touchdown run from quarterback Kyle Smith
The Warriors kept Sonora’s offense in check the rest of the way.
