Troy strikes fast to beat Sunny Hills
BUENA PARK Troy scored two touchdowns during an 80-second stretch early in the second quarter, leading to a 29-7 victory over Sunny Hills in a Freeway League contest Friday night at Buena Park High.
Quarterback Kyle Smith completed a 34-yard scoring strike to Kevin Tucker on the opening play of the second quarter, with Justin Austin adding a 5-yard scoring run to give visiting Troy (5-2, 1-1) a 20-0 lead with 10:27 left in the first half.
Austin led all ballcarriers with 147 yards on 26 carries, while Smith completed 6 of 12 passes for 101 yards as Troy ran up 340 yards on offense.
The Warriors held Sunny Hills (3-4, 0-2) to 209 yards, as the Lancers’ top running back, Jae Byun, was held to 64 yards on 24 carries.
Smith got Troy on the board with just over two minutes remaining in the fist quarter, as he connected with DeAngelo Bonner on a 14-yard scoring strike. Dyllan Steves ended the half with a 32-yard field goal as Troy possessed a 23-0 halftime margin.
Byun scored the Lancers’ only touchdown on a 35-yard pass from Tanner Christensen early in the third quarter, one play after Byun’s interception of a Smith pass and returning it 18 yards inside Warriors territory.
