Tran lifts Fountain Valley to victory over Edison
FOUNTAIN VALLEY – Vincent Tran was in an unusual position for the ninth-ranked Fountain Valley wrestling team Thursday night.
Tran is accustomed to opening the match as the Barons' 103-pound wrestler.
However, with the Sunset League dual against eighth-ranked Edison starting at 112, Tran would serve as closer.
He also proved to be the hero.
Fountain Valley trailed Edison by four heading into the final match. The Barons would end the night victorious, 38-36, thanks to Tran.
Tran scored a first-period victory by fall over Jimmy McLaughlin to seal the comeback victory.
Fountain Valley improves to 3-1 in the league. Edison falls to 2-2.
"I was ready," Tran said. "I wanted to come out tough. I wasn't scared of the kid; I just wanted go out and win."
Tran received a big motivation boost by what happened in the match before him. At heavyweight, Courtland Drummond won by fall over Peter Irving to make the score 36-32.
"He set the standard for me," Tran said of Drummond.
Drummond's victory ended a string of six consecutive victories by the Chargers. Edison trailed 26-3 after the 140-pound match, but then the Chargers hit the strength of their lineup and moved quickly.
Brenton Visnoski started the run with a technical fall at 145. Cameron Bustos followed with at 152 and Erick Zumwalt scored a major decision at 160 to cut the score to 26-18.
Joshua Peth (171), Casey Wilson (189) and D.J. Beynon (215) all won by fall to give the Chargers a 36-32 lead heading into the heavyweight match, where Drummond eventually derailed their hopes of a victory.
"After the Los Alamitos loss, my guys were down in the dumps," Fountain Valley coach Brad Woodbury said. "We wanted to beat these guys. They've always been ranked higher in the count than us. This is a great victory. The kids are working hard."
