CdM plan shuts down Trabuco Hills in semifinals
NEWPORT BEACH - Corona del Mar proved to be too much for Trabuco Hills to handle on Tuesday night, defeating the Mustangs, 25-16, 25-23, 25-13, in the semifinals of the boys volleyball CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.
Trabuco Hills (25-7) entered the playoffs as the Sea View League champions, and they pulled out a five-game victory over Oak Park on Saturday to advance to the semifinals.
But the Mustangs could not get past the Sea Kings (28-14), who earned the right to play Laguna Beach on Saturday at Cypress College for the Division 2 championship.
Coronda del Mar came up with a game plan to focused on Trabuco Hills' Brandon Stoker and Beau Osborne, who had a combined 44 kills in the quarterfinals against Oak Park.
“We knew number one (Stoker) and number five (Osborne) were their big studs, that they were gonna set (for those players) a ton,” said Corona del Mar coach Steve Conti.
The Sea Kings held Stoker and Osborne to nine kills each.
Parker Brown led Corona del Mar with nine kills, five digs and two aces, while Brennan Anderson (10 kills), Evan Dean (six kills), and Remmy Lamons (five kills) also made significant contributions.
Trabuco Hills senior setter Sean Nakada dealt out 21 assists.
