Mater Dei falls in tournament final
Mater Dei and Santiago of Corona dueled for another girls water polo title Saturday night.
In a matchup of Division 2 contenders, the Sharks defeated the Monarchs, 9-8, in the final of the America's Finest City Invitational in Coronado.
Mackenzie Barr, Sydney Blubaugh, Brianna Daboub and freshman Mia Salvini each scored twice for Mater Dei (14-8).
Mater Dei defeated Coronado, 18-13, in the quarterfinals and fellow Division 2 contender M.L. King of Riverside, 11-7, in the semifinals. Daboub scored nine goals against Coronado.
Last season, Mater Dei defeated Santiago, 12-8, in the finals of the America's Finest City tournament but the Sharks defeated the Monarchs, 9-8, in the CIF Division 2 final.
The teams have split two matches this season. Mater Dei beat Santiago (16-4) by another 9-8 margin in the ninth-place match at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.
