King pitches Orange Lutheran to title
IRVINE – Savannah King allowed one hit, three walks and struck out 14 to lead the Orange Lutheran softball team to a 5-0 victory over La Habra in the Gold Bracket Championship of the Woodbridge Tournament Saturday at Barber Park.
King (7-3), a junior, who has committed to Pittsburgh, was also selected tournament MVP.
"I came really pumped," said King, who compiled a 2-1 record in the tournament.
"We were all in a really good mood ... we were energized and stayed focused."
The Lancers (14-5) gave the 6-foot-1 right hander plenty of run support early in the contest.
In the top of the first, two infield singles, an error and a walk led to Orange Lutheran's first run.
In the second, Heather Hall singled home Devin Montgomery from second to make it 2-0.
A single and a walk put runners on first and second for the Lancers in the third.
Olivia Sandusky then moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, and Brittany Boesel's sacrifice fly to right scored Madison Osias from third to make it 3-0.
Sandusky went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and Hall went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Melanie Esparza got the lone hit for La Habra (10-5).
In the semifinal earlier in the day, Osias, who went 2-0 in the tournament, pitched the Lancers to a 1-0 victory over Mission Viejo.
"We're blessed with really good pitching," Orange Lutheran coach Steve Miklos said.
"It was definitely a team win for us in this tournament."
In another Woodbridge Tournament game:
Edison 4, North Torrance 0: Freshman Samantha Cordova threw a no-hitter to lead the Chargers over the Saxons in the Silver Bracket Championship.
Cordova, who had a perfect game earlier this season, struck out seven and walked three.
Jessica Plaza's two-run home run in the top of the seventh broke a scoreless tie.
