Foothill shows its versatility in victory
IRVINE Foothill got it done on the ground, in the air, and even threw in a trick play for a touchdown to gain a 39-15 victory over Northwood in Sea View League play Friday night at Irvine High.
Foothill (2-8, 2-2) gained 239 yards on the ground and passed for 214, and piled up 39 points before Northwood (3-6, 0-4) got two late touchdowns.
Quarterback Aaron Dupin led the charge, hitting eight passes for 161 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He threw for a touchdown on his first pass, a 20-yard toss to Andrew Cruikshank to give his team a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.
Tanner Bryant, the leading rusher for Foothill with 162 yards, broke away for a 24-yard touchdown sprint on the first play from scrimmage with 3:39 left in the second quarter.
A Northwood fumble later set up a 53-yard touchdown toss from Jake Dupre to Santiago Rodriguez on an option pass. Dupin hit Dupre on a short screen, allowing Rodriguez to get open down the sideline and make it a 20-0 game heading to the locker room.
After a three-and-out possession from Northwood opened the second half, Bryant ran his second touchdown of the night, again on Foothill’s first play from scrimmage, stretching the lead to 26-0 on the 55-yard run.
Northwood’s David Woolbert, the game’s leading rusher with 178 yards on 20 carries, broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter. Woolbert touched the ball each time Northwood went to the run.
In the final regular-season games for both teams, Foothill plays at El Toro, while Northwood is at Trabuco Hills. Both games are Thursday (Nov. 12).
