LEADING MAN: Mission Viejo quarterback Allan Bridgford is one of the main reasons the Diablos are expected to have a strong season.
Five Orange County high school football teams were selected among the top 20 for the rivals.com West region rankings announced today.

But no team from Orange County broke the top five, and Mater Dei - which features the nation's top recruit in quarterback Matt Barkley - was the first entry at No. 8.

No. 1 was no shock: De La Salle of Concord.

Then Nos. 2-7 were Long Beach Poly, Desert Vista of Phoenix, Centennial of Corona, Edison of Fresno, Timpview of Provo, Utah, and Skyline of Issaquah, Wash.

Bruce Rollinson's Monarchs, who open their season on national television Sept. 3 against Carson, are ranked eighth. Hamilton of Chandler, Ariz., and Punahou of Honolulu round out the top 10.

Other Orange County teams in the top 20:

12. Mission Viejo
13. Los Alamitos
15. Orange Lutheran
19. Edison
