MISSION VIEJO Woodbridge senior Christine Babcock acknowledged she still was fatigued from her epic race in Arcadia.
However, judging by her performance against the county's best, Babcock appeared to be at her usual spectacular best.
She rebounded from a rare second-place finish in the 3,200 meters of the Arcadia Invitational a week ago by setting meet records in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the Orange County Championships on Saturday at Mission Viejo High.
“I was a bit tired, but I had no choice but to go out and deal with it,” Babcock said. “I'm just looking to continue working hard.”
She started her record-setting day in the 1,600, distancing herself from the field early and cruising to victory in a time of 4:45.96, breaking her meet-record time of 4:48.81, set last year.
Later, she battled San Clemente junior Alex Dunne over the first five laps of the 3,200 before pulling away over the final three laps, winning in a time of 10:19.98.
The old mark of 10:25.04 was set by former Corona del Mar star Annie St. Geme in 2006.
It also was a record-setting day for Mission Viejo senior Chelsea Taylor. Spurred on by her home fans, Taylor exploded out of the blocks in the 300-meter hurdles and controlled the race throughout, finishing with a meet-record time of 43.54.
“It's overwhelming to see all my hard work paying off,” said Taylor, who moved into a tie for ninth all-time in the county. “This performance just pushes me to go even faster.”
Cypress senior Kandyce Doxey also enjoyed a successful day.
In a photo finish, she edged Westminster freshman Ariana Wright to win the girls 100 meters. Both finished in a time of 12.23. Later, she posted a 25.06 to win the 200 meters.
“I'm excited and very proud of my efforts,” she said.
In the 800 meters, Corona del Mar senior Shelby Buckley took the lead with 200 meters remaining and won in 2:16.37.
“I feel pretty good at this point season and its exciting to be county champion,” Buckley said.
Mission Viejo senior Sina Dailey continued to her standout efforts in the throws competition, winning the shot put (39 feet, 6 inches) and the discus (131-7).
Orange Lutheran freshman Annie Giebelhaus (5-4) continued a stellar freshman campaign by claiming the high jump title.
Dana Hills (69 points) edged Woodbridge (65 points) to win the overall team title for the first time in school history.
