Thurman's hot night propels Sunny Hills

FULLERTON – The stage was nothing new for Max Thurman.

As a sophomore last season, Thurman gained invaluable experience playing on the Sunny Hills squad that advanced to the semifinals of the CIF-SS playoffs as an 11th-seeded team.

Now starting as a junior for the fourth-seeded Lancers, he is poised to make another deep playoff run.

Thurman drained seven 3-pointers en route to a 32-point performance, leading Sunny Hills to a 70-45 victory over Lynwood on Friday night in a first-round game of the CIF-SS Division 2AA playoffs at Sunny Hills.

"In big games, players will look up to me, Ryan (Tan) and Veeraj (Chugh)," Thurman said. "We were the three from last year's team, and if we keep calm and keep poised, it spreads out throughout the whole team."

Thurman and Tan set the tone early. The duo combined to sink six 3-pointers, giving the Lancers a 24-7 lead after the first quarter.

Defensively, Sunny Hills guards Tim Ahn and Elijah Kim's on-ball pressure forced the Knights (15-11) into committing six first-quarter turnovers.

The Lancers (22-7) took a 36-21 advantage into the locker room, but the break proved to cool down Sunny Hills' sharpshooters.

The Lancers opened the second half 0-for-7 from the field, while Lynwood used a quick 6-0 run to cut the deficit to nine points.

"It's fun to watch as a spectator, but it's hell to coach at time," Lancers coach John Wooldridge said of his team. "We take some bad shots at times, and that was very evident tonight."

After the Knights' run, Thurman responded by scoring 13 points in the final 3:50 of the third quarter, extending the lead back to 18points.

The Lancers opened up the fourth quarter on a 14-5 run.
