El Dorado falls to Torrey Pines in three sets
DEL MAR HEIGHTS – Coming off a loss in the CIF-SS Division 1A final against La Salle of Pasadena on Saturday, the El Dorado girls volleyball team was put in a tough spot when it drew CIF San Diego Section Division I champion Torrey Pines in the first round of the Southern California Regionals.
The second-seeded Falcons dominated the seventh-seeded Golden Hawks right from the start and claimed a 25-17, 25-18, 25-10 sweep against El Dorado at Torrey Pines High on Tuesday.
The Golden Hawks finished their season with back-to-back losses and a 22-15 record.
“It was a great year,” El Dorado head coach Craig Tefertiller said. “We had a great run. We’d like to be healthy the entire time and get everyone on the same page, but different people stepped up and it was a great team effort from the start.”
The most competitive set of the night was the opening set as the Golden Hawks clawed to within two points of the Falcons, 19-17, before Torrey Pines scored the last six points and claimed a 25-17 victory.
“They came out and played harder than us,” junior Kelly Claes said. “When we started, we were right there with them, but we just didn’t keep the momentum. It wasn’t our game.”
Claes posted a solid all-around effort in the loss. The junior had five kills, two blocks, five assists and seven digs. Rebecca Bonaker led El Dorado with seven kills, and Kristen Fox led in assists with 10.
