Tesoro’s girls cross country team entered the 2012 season looking to go beyond being one of the county’s top squads and become one of the state’s elite.

The trip wasn’t always smooth and wasn’t without its challenges, but the Titans persevered.

Led by Coach Pattie Fasola, Tesoro went on an impressive run through CIF that culminated with the Titans being the county’s most successful team on the state’s biggest stage.

For her efforts, Fasola has been selected the Register’s 2012 Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Last season Tesoro finished sixth in Division 2 at the CIF State Cross Country Championships, and it returned this fall with several key runners from that team along with talented newcomer Amanda Gehrich.

The Titans began the season at less than 100 percent, with key contributor Emily Scharmann hampered by injuries.

Realizing the importance of building toward the season’s penultimate races, Fasola instructed her team to concentrate on improving throughout the regular season with an eye toward CIF.

Tesoro placed sixth in the sweepstakes race at the Orange County Championships before producing one of their best efforts of the season the following week at the Mt. SAC Invitational.

With their lineup rounding into top form, the Titans produced the fastest overall team time of all county teams at the meet, finishing second in their heat behind powerhouse Saugus.

Though Tesoro finished fourth at the South Coast League Finals, they earned a berth into CIF and refused to squander it.

At the CIF-SS Division 2 finals, Tesoro had four runners score in the top 50 and finished second to Saugus.

The Titans then closed out the season with a strong finish at the CIF State Cross Country Championships. With four runners scoring in the top 50, Tesoro finished fourth in Division 2, the best finish in school history. The Titans also scored as the eighth best team among all teams in all five divisions (best among county schools), and had the fastest overall team time of all county schools at the meet.
