Mason, Tesoro dominate in 56-14 victory
ALISO VIEJO - A year ago, Tesoro was playing in the CIF-SS Pac-5 Division championship game, but on Friday it was playing for pride.
Turns out, the Titans have some.
Tesoro scored 28 points in the second quarter and coasted to a 56-14 South Coast League victory over Aliso Niguel.
Fourth-place Tesoro (5-5, 2-3) will petition for an at-large playoff berth in the Pac-5 Division, but without a signature victory stands little chance of receiving it.
“This was a great way to finish the year,” said third-year coach Brian Barnes, whose squad is 25-10 under his direction, including last year’s 13-1 campaign.
Senior starter Brett Mason had an outstanding second quarter for Tesoro. He ran 50 yards for one score, and 28 to set up another. He also hit Kyle Woolbright with scoring passes of 9 and 25 yards in the final 38 seconds of the half.
Both of those scores followed interceptions - Trevor Weis returned his 69 yards to the 11 with 1:01 to go, and Michael Crouch got his at the Aliso 25.
Mason finished with three touchdown passes.
Zach Hartman added a 25-yard interception return and Kyle Cisna a 95-yard kickoff return for touchdowns.
The loss ended a nightmarish four-year run in the South Coast League for Aliso Niguel (2-8, 0-5). The Wolverines, who will be part of the Sea View League next season in the Coast View Conference, lost their 16th consecutive league contest dating to 2006, and were outscored in the final three games, 139-20.
Matt Morris and Russ Abdulla scored for Aliso Niguel.
