St. Margaret's still too much for Campbell Hall

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO - The last time St. Margaret’s played Campbell Hall of North Hollywood, the Tartans easily defeated the Vikings.

Friday night’s playoff game between the two teams was no different.

St. Margaret’s overcame a sluggish start to defeat Campbell Hall, 58-14, to end the Vikings’ season and give the Tartans their 39th consecutive victory. (Full game stats.)

It is the second longest winning streak in county history, just two short of the all-time record (41, by Mission Viejo, 2001-03).

The Tartans scored in three plays on their first offensive possession, but committed turnovers the next two times.

Midway through the second quarter, Campbell Hall (5-6) quarterback Josh Schwartz completed a 71-yard drive by connecting for a 6-yard touchdown pass with Matt Trebek, which closed the gap to 14-8.

With an upset starting to look possible, Tartans quarterback David Mothander  hit wide receiver Alex Brolic for a 92-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds left in the second quarter, which increased St. Margaret’s lead to 21-8 and gave them momentum heading into the second half.

And the Tartans (11-0) went on to pull away for good. After a three-and-out on their first possession in the second half, Mothander scored on an 8-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing possession, Mike Schmall picked off a pass from Schwartz and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown.

The Tartans finished with 306 total yards, which is about 105 yards below their average.

“I thought with just a few exceptions that the defense was pretty solid,” St. Margaret’s coach Harry Welch said.
