Welch gets No. 200 as St. Margarets pushes streak to No. 35
The Tartans overpower Western Christian, 58-7, to exend state's longest active winning streak.
COVINA - St. Margaret’s football coach Harry Welch notched his 200th career victory as the Tartans defeated Western Christian of Covina, 58-7, in a nonleague game Saturday at Western Christian High.
The victory was the 35th in a row for the Tartans (7-0), the longest active streak in the state and 14th-longest in the nation. It is also the second-longest in Orange County history. Mission Viejo won 41 in a row.
“As you grow older you appreciate mature fraternities,” Welch said of his 200th victory. “To be mentioned in the same breath as coaches like John Barnes, Bob Johnson, Jim Kunau and Eric Patton is exciting and thrilling.”
Quarterback David Mothander ran for two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes. Mothander completed 14 passes for 209 yards against the Fighting Lancers (5-2).
Field position proved to be the key for St. Margaret's. Six times the Tartans began a series inside the Fighting Lancers' 35-yard-line.
Early in the first quarter, Mothander scored on an 8-yard run. John Murayama added two short scoring runs to extend the Tartans' lead to 21-0 in the second quarter.
