VALLEY VILLAGE - After a last-minute change in time and location, Coach Harry Welch’s St. Margaret’s squad came out of the gate not quite firing on all cylinders, but they still managed to come away with a convincing 37-0 victory over host Campbell Hall.
The victory was the 32nd in a row for the Tartans, matching the second longest streak in county history. Mission Viejo won a county-best 41 in a row from 2001-03.
“We were a little out of sync,” Welch said. “We didn’t have any of our students (here) because they were in school. No cheerleaders (and) leaving at 11 o’clock in the morning, it was difficult to make adjustments.”
Nevertheless, for the third game out of four, the Tartans defense made all the adjustments it needed to ensure a shutout.
St. Margaret’s (4-0) recorded three sacks — 1 1/2 of them by Fred Valencia — and a blocked punt for a safety.
The Tartans held Vikings running back Freedom McCollough to 59 yards on seven attempts and limited Campbell Hall’s passing to 62 yards.
The Vikings (1-3) managed just 162 yards of total offense to the Tartans’ 385.
Quarterback David Mothander showed his arm strength in going 12 for 23 with 259 yards, three TD passes and no interceptions.
