St. Margaret's extends winning streak to 29
Murayama scores five TDs as the Tartan defeat Mammoth, 69-0.
Senior running back John Murayama rushed for 154 yards and five touchdowns, and senior quarterback David Mothander threw for 184 yards and four touchdowns, as the Tartans blasted the Mammoth Huskies, 69-0, on Saturday night at St. Margaret’s High.
“We just wanted to play as a team and do what we know how to do,” Murayama said. “We did everything the way we wanted to do and it was a good game for us.”
St. Margaret’s (1-0) has won 29 consecutive games, the third-longest winning streak in Orange County history, and the longest active streak in the state.
“For our first game, I thought it was an impressive performance.” Tartans coach Harry Welch said. “We just want to focus on us and getting better every week.”
The Tartans wasted little time in taking control of the game. After stopping the Huskies (0-2) on their initial possession, it took just three plays for the Tartans to take the lead, as Mothander found junior wide receiver J.T. Carpenter for a 29-yard touchdown pass.
The Tartans added to the lead less than four minutes later. Mothander lofted a 9-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Travis Anderson to make 13-0.
On their next drive, Mothander’s 43-yard scramble down the right sideline set up a 1-yard TD plunge by Murayama.
The Tartans defense held the Huskies to 70 total yards.
Murayama’s second 1-yard touchdown run made it 27-0.
The Tartans then put the game away by scoring 21 points in less than four minutes.
Mothander hit wide receiver J.T. Carpenter from 53 yards out, making it 34-0. After recovering a Huskies fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Murayama scampered 12 yards for his third TD of the half, giving the Tartans a 41-0 lead.
