El Dorado takes control in second half
PLACENTIA — It was a tale of two halves for El Dorado on Thursday night.
After a sloppily played first half, the Golden Hawks’ offensive execution in the second half allowed them to defeat Brea Olinda, 28-0, in a Century League game at Valencia High.
El Dorado (4-2-1, 2-0) compiled 198 yards of offense in the first two quarters, but took only a 6-0 lead into the half.
A missed field goal and a fumble deep inside Brea Olinda territory stalled two Golden Hawks drives.
“The first drive of the second half really set the tone for the rest of the game,” El Dorado coach Shawn Racobs said.
Quarterback Andres Ambuehl engineered the eight-play, 87-yard drive to open the third quarter, completing all four of his pass attempts for 66 yards.
Brock Dunn capped the drive with a 5-yard TD run, extending the lead to 14-0.
On the ensuing possession for the Wildcats (2-5, 0-2), QB Randy Liggins was picked off for a second time by Dunn.
Two plays after the turnover, Ambuehl dumped a pass off to tight end Luke Wood, who rumbled 47 yards to give El Dorado a 21-0 lead with 1:59 remaining in the third quarter.
