FOR OCVARSITY.COM

LA HABRA – Ryan Tan sparked a 15-0 run by Sunny Hills' boys basketball team late in the second quarter to break open a close game and lead the Lancers to an 85-68 victory over La Habra in a Freeway League game at La Habra on Friday night.

Sunny Hills (20-6, 7-1) made 12 3-pointers and won its seventh consecutive league game.

With La Habra (7-13, 2-6) leading, 30-28, with just over three minutes to play in the first half, Tan got hot and scored 10 of the Lancers 15 points in the final minutes. Tan's back-to-back baskets propelled Sunny Hills into a 32-30 lead with 2:43 left. Moments later, Tan drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to increase the Lancers lead to 40-30 with 1:01 remaining in the first half.

"We kept up the tempo and got their legs tired," said Tan, who finished with 15 points. "Our energy was up, and we played with good intensity."

Elijah Kim hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for the Lancers. Tim Ahn added 12 points, and Max Thurman had 11 for Sunny Hills.

Sunny Hills forced four consecutive turnovers down the stretch in the first half and held the Highlanders scoreless for the final 3:18 of the half to turn the tide.

"The tempo was in our favor," said Lancers coach John Wooldridge. "We felt if we scored in the 60s, 70s or 80s we would be okay."

La Habra guard Zachary Gray led all scorers with 19 points. Adam Cooley had 15 points and Michael Banks added 10 for La Habra, which has lost three consecutive games.

"They run fast, and we stayed with them but we got tired," said Highlanders coach Dave Ploog. "We ran out of gas, and they continued to make shots."
