Sunny Hills rebuilds quickly

OCVARSITY.COM

Sunny Hills’ girls water polo team has reloaded quickly.

The Lancers feature only three returning starters from last season’s Division 4 playoff team but are 11-0 after capturing the Los Altos tournament Saturday.

Sunny Hills defeated Walnut, 9-5, in the finals at Mt. SAC behind a team-high three goals from Connie Garcia, a bench player last season.

Newcomers Danielle Christensen and Kathy Hernandez are splitting time in goal for the Lancers but combined for 10 saves against Walnut.

Sunny Hills’ three returning starters Cecilya Lundy, Kerstin Laye and Alexandrea Paxton also are playing well along with new starters Sabrina Jamison and Kate Vera.

Veteran coach Keith Nighswonger said the Lancers’ improved defense in the field has been important.

“I’ve got a very strong first six,” he said, “but our bench has responded very well.”

Sunny Hills, which also claimed the Valley tournament, plays in the Ayala tournament this week.
