The Friars' faithful try to put Mater Dei incident behind them.

ORANGE- A week after some students in Servite's "Pit Crew" directed racist chants at the Mater Dei basketball team, the Friars' student section was loud, full and on its feet, throughout Friday night's 72-67 Trinity League loss at Orange Lutheran.

"We're just going to cheer for our team," sophomore Ryan Grenier said.

Said sophomore Preston Valder: "We're definitely moving past it. … It was a stupid thing that a couple of kids did."

After last week's incident, the "Pit Crew" returned with new, extra-clean cheers, following a school assembly to discuss the Mater Dei game. The fan section still provided a substantial vocal presence Friday night, despite laying claim to less than a quarter of the bleachers.

Students repeatedly referred to the incident as "dumb" and "unfortunate," saying that some people briefly carried on a chant - which had started with a few fans - before realizing the implications of the jeer. Some saw it as an attempt to throw off an opponent that went too far.

Without exception, students - when asked - spoke of their desire to move on and continue in their role as animated supporters of the basketball team.

"We're going to cheer like we always did," Grenier said.

As for moving on, Servite president Peter Bowen said he's done talking about the controversy.

"We've made our statement to the Register," Bowen said. "And we're comfortable with that."
